After a short drive through the forest to look for Leopards, I went down to the lake shore to find an amazing quantity of Rhinoceroses of both species, Black and White, resting on the grassy plains. I also witnessed an unusual interaction between a group of four Black Rhinos and a bull White Rhino. They smelled and faced each other off, then the four Black Rhinos moved away and gave space to their much bigger cousin. I counted eleven different Black Rhinos today on my game drive, a clear sign of the good condition of the population here in Lake Nakuru NP. In this season, with the abundant vegetation, the Black Rhinos are seen frequently grazing out in the plains, eating off the fresh new bushes growing after the rains. In the afternoon I returned to the lake shore. Here a trio of Spotted Hyenas made some futile attempts at hunting Flamingos, while a pair of Zebra’s stallion fought extensively.
