After leaving Tsavo West NP I headed down towards the Kenyan coast. It is not an area I visit very frequently, as generally I am not a person who likes the sea too much. But here in this area there are some very interesting places for wildlife as well. One of the most fascinating is certainly the Arabuko Sokoke Forest, located immediately south of Watamu. It is one of the very few remnant pockets of coastal forests in East Africa and as such, it hosts a variety of endemic species which can only be seen here. The most representative one is probably the Sokoke Scops Owl, of which around one thousand pairs are reported. We found this couple roosting in the heart of the forest, and they were amazingly confident, letting us get close for some images.
