Under cloudy skies we spent some time at a Spotted Hyena den, where pups of different ages were drinking milk from their mothers. In particular, there was a couple of really tiny pups, maybe two weeks old, extremely cute. The Lion cubs along the Mara river hid in the thicket for most of the day, but came out briefly for some nice poses. As the sky filled with clouds and heavy rains started pouring, we sat with a group of six Lionesses of the Ol Kiombo pride. It was fantastic to see them wake up as the rain ceased, and start playing like cubs across the plains. They headed up to the Wildebeests’ herds, certainly preparing for a night hunt. It is always a great emotion to see the Lions walking towards the herds as dusk falls, see their tactic as they surround the animals, their shadows moving through the dark. Being alone in those moments in the middle of these immense plains is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences.
