A very sad day in the Mara, as the Cheetah lost one of her cubs tonight. We drove around to look for the Rekero pride of Lions in the morning and we found them up in the plains. Just next to them was the Cheetah, who is named Malaika, meaning “Angel” in Swahili, with only one of her cubs. She looked nervous and wary. The Lions were flat in the grass but as some Zebras approached, they tried to hunt them. Malaika looked at them, hidden by the tall grass, and decided to sneak away. A Spotted Hyena appeared, and she charged her angrily. She disappeared in the tall grass, only one cub behind her. The afternoon was for Leopards, with new guests. A young male climbed a tree where an Impala kill was stashed and dropped it to the ground while eating, while near our camp Olive woke up at sunset from her lair in the tall grass. All the vehicles left and we were left alone with her, we followed her as she patrolled and marked her territory, until her shape faded in the falling darkness.
